History of Roanoke Island, NC
The town of Manteo was officially incorporated in 1899, however, its history dates back much further to the 16th century. The first English settlement in America began here. Although the colonies were unsuccessful, their discoveries and insight helped lead to thriving colonies, such as Jamestown, VA. This area is also well known for the Freedmen’s Colony, a safe haven and thriving community of freed slaves on Roanoke Island during the Civil War. Coast Guard heroes, Richard Etheridge and Herbert Collins, also lived and grew up in this area. Today, Manteo is well known for its historic attractions, charming downtown area and lively arts scene.
