History of Avon, NC
Avon is a fairly new name for this centrally located village on Hatteras Island. The town was originally named Kinnakeet, an Algonquin Indian word meaning that which is mixed, due to the variety of settlements based in the area. The dense maritime forests in this area provide a bounty of wood and natural resources for American Indians and early residents. When the Kinnakeet Lifesaving Station was built in 1871, many people moved to the area to oversee the station's operations. After the station closed in 1915, many employees moved on, but local farmers and fishermen remained. As word spread about the beauty of the Outer Banks, small oceanfront beach boxes began to appear in the 1960s, Today, Avon is a mixed of vintage beach box cottages and contemporary seaside homes. Avon is a wonderful destination for those looking to getaway and find a secluded peace of paradise. Nearby shopping and dining make it convenient for vacationers without loosing its sleepy beach town charm.
