History of Duck

The reasoning behind the town’s name is a nod to the area's waterfowl heritage. The Currituck Sound has always been known as an outdoorsmen's paradise with a heavy population of ducks that attracted many visitors to the area beginning in the early 1900s. The town’s postmaster decided to give the town the name Duck for this very reason. The town was incorporated in 2002 and has continued to grow ever since. In the last decade, major improvements have been made to the area, including the town’s boardwalk and park, to promote tourism.
